About the trek

A trek around the Annapurna range of the Himalayas in Nepal can be quite challenging but every bit rewarding with panoramic views, comfortable tea-houses to stay and the opportunity to scale one of the world’s highest trekking goals – the Thorung La (La meaning pass) at 5416 meters.

It had been my goal for the past 5 years to do a Himalayan trek. When Harsha and I had been on the Goa trek in Dec 2007, we met a couple of people who had trekked in Nepal and recommended the trek greatly. So, that set us thinking along those lines and this year we decided to do the Annapurna trek, which is one of the most popular and scenic treks in Nepal.

We decided not to join any group but to do it on our own - just the two of us! We planned our trek with the help of the Lonely Planet (LP) Guide, Trekking in the Nepal Himalayas. Kathmandu based travel company, Above the Himalaya Trekking Ltd helped us make arrangements for the porter, stay and transportation within Nepal.

Preparing for the trip of a lifetime!

It took us more than 2 months of planning to get set for this trip. The LP guide gave us a pretty comprehensive list of things required for the trek.
We sourced some of the gear such as trekking poles and head lamps from Avi Industries in Mumbai, where we got much better price quotes than what we found at Bangalore.
We also stocked up on some hi-tech clothes that wick sweat away from the body (such as Nike Dry-Fit) and didn’t mind the premium that we had to pay for them.

We spoke to people who had done this trek before, people such as KS uncle, who happens to be an avid trekker himself. I used to often chat with Puru from Above The Himalaya Trekking Ltd and found out lots of nitty gritty details that helped us plan properly for this trip of a life time!
